COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2018 is filled with action-packed announcements
There are loads and loads of stuff to share about COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2018. As always, it is a mix bag of big announcements from the usual powerhouses and the more important reveals that industry stalwarts have put out. The latter includes the jaw-dropping details that Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA – along with their respective partners – are planning for this year.
As there is just so much to cover, Team PC.com believes it is best to – instead – do a quick round-up of the happenings at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2018.
It’s All About Core Count
Let’s start with Intel first. While most expect it, no one thought Santa Clara would show-off one of its yet unannounced chips at Asia’s major tech conference. Indeed, the one-half of the infamous chip-maker rivalry has put out a whopping 28-Core monster! Its base clock-speed is already running at 5.0GHz, making it one of the fastest single socket chips in the world.
This reveal definitely breaks away from Intel’s tradition of sharing the next update in its current-gen Intel Core series. Going by the live-demo on stage, this Intel 28-Core CPU aptly destroys the Cine bench benchmark test in mere seconds. Of course, dumping so many cores onto a single socket chip means the TDP is a lot higher. Indeed, the power rating is drawing a whopping 205W; this is nearly 1.5x more than the native 165W demand from a 18-Core processor.
Such capabilities mean it can go against a high-end server chip or directly rival AMD’s efforts in that space. Personally, there is tinge of hope that this will become an enthusiast chip that are not server class processors, like the 28-Core Intel Xeon 8180. Let’s hope Intel listens in on consumer demand and follow through. If that is so, the move will be shockingly amazing.
