What is your earliest memory? I have such happy memories of my childhood in Burnaby, British Columbia. I remember my dad, who worked as a commercial salmon fisherman, taking me out in his boat. And my beautiful mum, who stayed at home to raise my younger sisters and me, driving around with me in my “little green machine”.
Did you have a career plan B? I was close to studying to become a journalist. At 24 years old, I’d been working the nightclubs since I was 16 and record companies kept saying, “You’re a very talented kid, but we just don’t see how this could work commercially.” The funny thing is though, once a record company did sign me, I started writing a column for a magazine – and I was terrible at it.
What does success mean to you today? It has nothing to do with business or money or any of that stuff – it’s just about family. Their happiness and wellbeing is all that matters.
