When it comes to cyber crime, why are we still being trapped by the web?

Fooled By Fraud

Earlier this year it was reported that a fraudster was contacting Hampshire schools, pertaining to be the headteacher. The criminal in question was then persuading the school’s head of finance to make a one-off urgent money transfer, which was between £8,000 and £10,000 in each instance.

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) said several schools across the country had suffered “substantial financial losses” because of this.

Contact was typically made through email – from a similar email address to the one the headteacher in question would use. In the wake of the spree, the NFIB warned school staff to make contact with their colleague directly if approached, and challenge requests they think might be suspicious.
