The Beaver Within

After several years, many miles and lots of hard work, two brothers brought the creation of ‘Mr. Beaver’ to life

The Beaver Within
Had it not been for my older brother, Russ Kubara, a retired school teacher, chainsaw carver extraordinaire and resident of Beausejour, Man., “Mr. Beaver” may never have seen the light of day.

As a professional wood carver and instructor, Russ’ creations are displayed across Canada and the United States. They include a hawk as the centrepiece in one small town and a “pig chef” as the icon on display in the front of a restaurant in another. His carvings are also proudly displayed at many residences and even in standing trees on a trail in the forest. As a handsaw and chainsaw carving instructor, Russ has been acknowledged by newspapers and television, won several carving events and been featured carving live at events, such as county fairs.

For many years, Russ had wanted to create a masterpiece in my front yard, but I didn’t know what that piece should be or how we would move it from Russ’ home in Manitoba to my home, 2,500 kilometres away, in Surrey, B.C. So we waited.
