Where do we go when we dream of a space? That’s the question Clare Watson often asks of her clients. As the founder of Turmeric House, Clare is part of the new generation of contemporary creatives working at the intersection of events, experience and interior design and is used to working in some rather large spaces. But for her, home is a much smaller setting.
Along with her partner, Adam, and dog, Zenni, Clare lives in a 750 sq ft unusual-looking converted iron forge situated on a roundabout in Mayford, which they have transformed into stylish bijou boardings.
“I’m a natural maximalist so, living within a small space, I had to make it work for me, my family and my business,” she says. “I’m most proud of the feeling I’ve created with the colour, furniture, décor, collections and props. I think generally people come in and feel a good energy, it feels happy open and light.”
The home might well be cosy but it’s brilliantly smart and recently made the finals in the global Apartment Therapy Small Cool Contest 2020.
The main living area is a multifunctioning space that Clare and Adam use for everything from working and exercising to entertaining and relaxing. What the space lacks in floor space, it makes up for in height and so the couple have used wall space to their advantage by introducing storage at various different levels, while overhead windows flood the room with light, helping to give the illusion of space. They’ve also used several large outdoor pots with palms and tall plants to help evoke a feeling of bringing the outdoors in.
