Take the opportunity to visit the picturesque gardens at Fairlight Hall, a private estate, at their open day this month

Home to Sarah and David Kowitz since 2002, Fairlight Hall near Hastings is set in some 90 acres of grounds and has a fascinating garden that opens on a few selected days through the season.

Head gardener John Myers, who trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and is a temperate and tropical specialist, showed me around. He was part of Kew’s unique temperate house glass restoration project, the largest in the garden’s history, and is enjoying his new role at Fairlight Hall’s garden and the range of areas on offer. “I admire Sarah and David’s vision of restoration and modernisation at one of England’s most beautiful country house estates. Their love and knowledge of organic sensibilities, which is so obviously reflected in their unique gardens, is paramount to my own beliefs of how a modern garden should be cultivated. I was delighted to be asked to head the gardening team and work with them to develop their ongoing horticultural and design ideas,” John says.
