Back in the 1960s and 1970s, a little-known French company called Alpine sent ripples through the motoring world. Its small, lightweight sports cars won the Monte Carlo Rally, the World Rally Championship and the Le Mans 24 Hours, beating some of the biggest names in motor racing.
Now Alpine is back with the new A110. It’s a thoroughly modern machine, but one that stays true to that original recipe. Powered by a mid-mounted fourcylinder engine and weighing scarcely more than 1,100kg, it’s a stripped back driver’s car that has the likes of the Lotus Elise and the Porsche Cayman firmly within its sights.
UNDER THE BONNETThe first thing that strikes you about the A110 is its beautifully compact dimensions. Most modern cars tower above the diminutive Alpine, which goes some way to explaining how it manages to offer similar performance to a Porsche Cayman S, despite conceding nearly 100PS to its German rival.
