What's Life Without Whatsapp?

India’s mobile economy has seen tremendous growth in the past two years, with mobile app downloads and time spent on app more than doubling since 2014. App Annie, a reputed business intelligence company that provides analytic service and market intelligence, predicts a continued growth for India’s mobile market, with app store downloads to reach 20.1 billion by 2020 — showing a growth rate of 92%. One of the fastest-growing sectors is retail, with time spent on apps growing 11 times from 2014 to 2016. Revenue has also grown and mobile commerce is taking home an increasing portion of overall in-app spend.

A study published by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations estimates direct employment in this industry to range between 1,51,230 and 1,59, 010 by 2016. Apps currently account for 75,000 jobs in India. Accordingly, the increase in direct employment attributable to India’s App economy is expected to range between 76,230 and 84,010 jobs from 2014 to 2016. “At present there are between 50-70 thousand professional mobile app developers in India, which is absolutely insufficient. By 2020 we will have over billion phones connected on Internet. My estimate is that we will need 20 million app developers at that time,” says Subho Ray, President, IAMAI.

What is an App?

In technical terminology ‘Apps’ are bite-sized software programmes called mobile software applications or popularly ‘apps’ which are designed to run on smartphones, tablet computers and other mobile devices. These apps use data-stream either continuously or on a one-off basis to deliver information and perform specific functions. Apps have revolutionized the way mobile phones are used, enabling users in social networking, gaming, navigation, health, education, utilities etc.
