Cutting back boosts health and cropping, says Ruth

ONCE your free-standing apple and pear trees have lost their leaves, you can prune those that need it.

The aim is to take out old wood, encourage new wood to grow, and create a healthy, open-shaped tree.

Always use sharp, clean tools and start by removing dead, dying and diseased wood, as well as any branches that are crossing, rubbing or weak.
