MY mum always enjoyed gardening, and as soon as I was old enough she wanted me to enjoy it, too. So, knowing they would mature before I lost interest, she showed me how to sow some radish seed.

Three or four weeks later I pulled a red-and-white ‘French Breakfast’ radish out of the ground, took it into the kitchen, washed it and took my first bite of the first food I’d grown myself. I then promptly spat it out as it was so hot!

The experience put me off gardening for years, until I eventually swung back around and studied horticulture. And here I am, writing about radishes – and enjoying eating homegrown radishes for much of the year.

But, surely, growing radishes is so easy that the last thing we need is three pages in AG highlighting the best varieties to choose and explaining how to grow them? Not so fast…
