Bikers Brave The Cold For A Good Cause
Drum English|29 June 2017

BIKERS from across Gauteng, together with members of the Gauteng provincial legislature (GPL), braved the Sunday morning winter cold on 11 June to send a very strong message against gender-based violence and child abuse.

In a bikers’ breakfast run organised by the GPL’s portfolio committee on community safety in partnership with the Rainbow Mzansi Bikers Organization (Rambo Council), members of the portfolio committee and bikers united in one voice calling for an end to gender based violence and child abuse.

“Enough is enough” was the slogan of the day. Bikers and members of the provincial legislature met at Southgate Mall and proceeded to Bara taxi rank to create awareness among taxi drivers and commuters on the impact of genderbased violence that has plagued the province – and to mobilise men to be protectors of women and children.

The next stop was Maponya Mall, where bikers received loud cheers as they entered the gates of the mall. The last stop was Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, where members and bikers addressed community members from Kliptown and surrounding areas.

The chairperson of the portfolio committee on community safety, Sochayile Khanyile, used his address to call for harsher sentences for perpetrators of genderbased violence.
