Steven Degennaro Talks Shaky Cam Horror...

Found Footage 3d

Regardless if filmed from a single perspective or as a faux documentary, found footage is a sub-genre of film that divides audiences around the globe. Some find it an incredibly immersive experience, while others are pre-occupied, taking deep breaths in an attempt to fight off a strong sense of motion sickness. But, regardless of personal taste, it is nearly impossible to deny the effectiveness of The Blair Witch Project, The Sacrament, Hate Crime and Lake Mungo in creating a world that deeply disturbs its audience.

So in a sea packed with literally hundreds possibly thousands of hours of shaky cam, banshee screams, and stomach turning visuals, one filmmaker has taken a stand to raise the bar. Steven DeGennaro’s latest film Found Footage 3D is a real tour de force and tells the story of an ill-fated group of filmmakers out to make the first 3D found footage horror movie only to find themselves in one when a supernatural force hunts them down.

We were at Horror Channel FrightFest in London to see the film at its international premiere where we caught up with the director himself to discuss what inspired him to make the film, what it was like to be on set and the complexities of shooting in 3D.

SCREAM: Steven, thanks for taking the time to speak with to SCREAM about your latest film Found Footage

3D. What inspired the making of Found Footage 3D?

STEVEN DEGENNARO: It is the love child of my two favourite horror movies: The Blair Witch Project and Scream. I realised that no one had yet done for found footage what Scream did for slashers, and it seemed like it was time. We wanted to tell a story that was both funny and scary. Scream, to me, is the one movie that has managed that most successfully. So this is certainly what we were aiming for with our film. Whether or not we succeeded is up to the audience to decide.
