The first in a planned series of novels following the adventures of necromancer Lanie Stones, Saint Death’s Daughter is a chunky tome that opens with an intimidatingly long list of supposedly useful terms, including the names for the days of the week and months of the year used in this fantasy world. It feels like a serious undertaking. But then the book proper begins, and none of that really matters. This is fun.
Born into a family of assassins, Lanie has an affinity for the dead. She communes with the god of death, talks to ghosts, and raises cute little mouse skeletons to keep as pets. When a power struggle breaks out among the rulers of her realm, though, she finds herself caught in the middle, her ability to raise an undead army making her a potential kingmaker.
