A father faces a heartbreaking decision about his conjoined twin girls
When conjoined twins Marieme and Ndeye were born in Senegal two-and-a-half years ago, doctors there insisted they had no hope of survival. But, so far, the girls have defied all expectations.
However, their father, Ibrahima, now faces an impossible decision. Marieme’s heart is weak – so weak that she may die. If she does, then Ndeye will die with her.
HEARTBREAKING
Ibrahima’s only choice is to allow surgeons to separate the twins, knowing that Marieme is unlikely to survive the operation.
‘Marieme is getting weaker every day and, by supporting her, Ndeye is getting weaker also,’ says Ibrahima. ‘It’s painful, I’m not denying it. I have moments of very deep anxiety you can’t describe. When you see Marieme laughing, playing and smiling, it makes things harder. They’re both full of life at this point.’
