Charles Dickens’ much-loved novel Oliver Twist has captivated readers for almost 200 years with its heart-rending tale of a fragile orphan escaping the brutality of a workhouse before being immersed in a criminal underworld.
But the plucky young hero at the heart of new drama Twist, Sky Premiere’s reimagining of the 19th-century classic, is a far cry from the traditional starving waif asking for more.
The action-packed, darkly comic film is set on the vibrant streets of present-day London and brings the novel bang up to date by turning Twist (Raff Law) into a graffiti artist and free-runner, who, on the death of his painter mother, is drawn to wily art lover Fagin (Sir Michael Caine) and his team of thieves.
As the gang spot Twist’s agility and artistic talents, he is soon embroiled in a heist involving a Hogarth painting connected to art dealer Losberne (David Walliams).
‘I was hooked on the idea of a modern Oliver Twist. There is action and romance. It’s powerful and thrilling – and full of twists,’ says model and musician Law.
