SHERWOOD

NEW MON & TUE, 9PM, BBC1 DRAMA

Historic tensions within a Nottinghamshire mining village are ignited when two brutal murders spark a massive manhunt in BBCI's H new contemporary crime drama Sherwood.

Written by playwright James Graham (Quiz) and inspired in part by real events from 2004, the fictional six-part series is set in Ashfield (where James grew up), which still bears the scars from the miners' strike of 1984-85.

While most of Ashfield's miners belonged to the Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM), who broke the strike, National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) member Gary Jackson (played by New Tricks star Alun Armstrong) joined the pickets.

Gary still calls his UDM counterparts 'scabs', setting him at odds with his neighbours, while his wife, Julie (Mum's Lesley Manville), is estranged from her sister over their divided loyalties during the strike.
