After a five-year hiatus, Phillip Schofield’s high-octane game show The Cube returns to our screens this week with a new spin-off series – and the stakes are higher!
Originally running on ITV from 2009 to 2015, The Cube was an overnight hit and saw hopefuls performing seemingly simple mental and physical tasks within the confines of a large Perspex box.
Now, in new reboot series The Million Pound Cube, pairs of contestants – from the same household due to COVID-19 restrictions – will compete for the chance to win a life-changing £1 million jackpot. Each pair has nine lives to complete seven games, each worth an increasing amount of money.
The new series will be stripped across the week and bookended by celebrity specials.
Here, Phillip, 58, tells us more...
What changes have been made to the format?
It’s been five years since we were last in the studio and, in that time, the tech’s evolved. So, I knew it was going to look amazing but what I didn’t realise was how different a dynamic it was going to be. Also, as well as the huge new prize, it’s two players – so it could be mother/daughter, brother/ sister or father/son – and you wonder, ‘Why didn’t we always do it like this?’
Is it the same Cube or a bigger one?
It’s the exact same Cube. It had been all stored up, put in bubble wrap, and we brought it back out for this new series.
Will it be all new games, or will we see the return of some favourites, too?
