CALL THE MIDWIFE

LAST ONE SUNDAY / BBC1 / 8PM / EP 7 of 7 / DRAMA

The residents of Nonnatus House haven’t had a moment’s rest in the current 10th series of BBC1’s ever-popular period drama Call the Midwife, what with coping with challenging medical cases, demanding trainees, an engagement and a historic World Cup win!

It has been a particularly busy time for super-stylish nurse Trixie Franklin, played by original cast member Helen George. On secondment to the private Lady Emily Clinic, the caring midwife grew fond of a new mother, Fiona Aylward, who tragically died of leukaemia, and Trixie has since provided sterling support to Fiona’s widower, Matthew (Our Girl ’s Olly Rix), and their baby, Jonathan.

Meanwhile, Trixie’s fierce campaigning spirit shows no signs of abating. After taking part in a heated radio discussion about abortion reform last week, this Sunday’s season finale sees her expressing her outrage at the terrible state of tenement buildings in Poplar. But can she make a difference?

Here, Helen, 36, tells TV Times what to expect...

Trixie and Sister Frances (Ella Bruccoleri) help a lady give birth in a dirty tenement full of insects and vermin this week. What was that like to shoot?

These Victorian tenements should have been knocked down a long time ago and the conditions are awful. We have a squalid tenement set and we filmed in it for about five days. It was so impressive – we felt dirty just walking in! The mattress had newspapers stuffed in, it was horrendous, and you could imagine the smell. The sets have been incredible this year.
