MEET THE EXPERT

ROMESH DODANGODA

Romesh has worked with the likes of Motörhead, Bring Me The Horizon, Funeral For A Friend, Twin Atlantic, and many others at his Long Wave Studios in Cardiff. He also founded the online community Control Room where expert producers, engineers, and mixers share their knowledge with home producers of all ability levels. For more info, go to control-room.net

With more of us playing guitar at home now than ever, there's never been a better time to start recording your music. The technology to create and capture great tones has never been more accessible, and this month we’re looking at the mixing process.

Speaking with musicradar.com recently, Grammy-nominated producer Romesh Dodangoda offered his wisdom on recording at home. And, though we’re looking at mixing, there’s some more general advice here that might just bear fruit earlier on in the recording process too – especially if you’re mic’ing up real amps and cabs. Read on for nine of Romesh’s top tips.

“YOU CAN MAKE GUITARS SOUND BIGGER BY USING A DIFFERENT AMP ON EACH SIDE”

1. GO EASY ON THE GAIN

“You usually need less gain than you think. Pick the guitar tone while the track is playing so you can see what a song needs, rather than just a tone you think is good.”
