He has always denied that he was the “backpacker killer” despite a mountain of evidence proving Ivan Milat was the man behind a murderous spree, which took the lives of seven innocent travellers, and possibly even more victims.

Yet as he was in hospital dying of oesophagus and stomach cancer last week, it emerged that Australia’s most infamous serial killer has “confessed” to a woman he’s spent more than 20 years writing detailed letters to from his jail cell at Goulburn’s supermax prison.

CHILLING LETTERS

Criminologist Amanda Howard (inset), who is dubbed the “serial killer whisperer” because she regularly corresponds with some of the worst murderers in the world, says that his letters could be read as coded confessions to the brutal killing of seven backpackers, aged between 19 and 22.

“He has given me details of the crimes, but always in a hypothetical way,” she tells Woman’s Day. “It’s just like that book OJ Simpson wrote about what might have happened if he did kill his wife. He says things like, ‘if I was the killer in the forest’ and goes on to give detail.”
