The world’s focus may be on Ukraine as it’s battered by Russia but Angelina Jolie has taken it upon herself to remind people there are atrocities going on elsewhere.
And they shouldn’t be forgotten, she says, they shouldn’t get lost in the noise. It’s Angie doing what she does best: using her clout to try to make a difference.
The 46-year-old Oscar winner recently spent time in Yemen to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
“Everyone deserves the same compassion,” she says in one of several Instagram posts documenting her trip.
Angie has long been an advocate for the Yemeni people, thousands of whom have been killed, injured or displaced during the seven-year conflict between the Saudi Arabia-led military coalition government and the Houthi rebels.
More than five million people are on the brink of famine as fighting and economic decline leave them battling to find food. The child malnutrition rate is one of the highest in the world and images of starving children have been doing the rounds on social media for months, with aid groups imploring the world to help.
And Angie is doing just that. In her role as special envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency, she’s urging people to show compassion.
