Most of her family are proud to say they’re related to him, to be able to brag about spending Christmases with US President Donald Trump and their visits to the White House.
But all his niece can do is hang her head in shame and tell people how sorry she is. It’s safe to say that Mary L Trump isn’t her uncle’s greatest fan. And now, with the publication of her explosive new memoir, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, she’s letting the world know exactly what she thinks of him.
What really makes Mary’s book stand out from the scores of other Trump memoirs is that she’s not only a family insider – and the first in the clan to speak out publicly against the president – she’s also a trained psychologist. So she’s well placed to analyse what she’s seen, and it’s not pretty.
But it seems her motives for writing the tell-all, which her family tried unsuccessfully to block, aren’t entirely altruistic. Throughout the book, Mary (55) – the daughter of the president’s elder brother, Fred – has quite a few axes to grind.
She blames her powerful uncle for not doing enough to help her father when he developed a fatal heart condition that led to his premature death in 1981 aged 42.
To add insult to injury, The Donald allegedly tried to cheat her and her brother, Fred III (57), out of their inheritance by talking their grandfather Fred, who in later life suffered from Alzheimer’s, into rewriting his will to ensure they got a substantially smaller portion than the other Trump grandchildren.
