I must confess that growing up, I was that kid who bawled for three days after the neighbourhood hairstylist chopped off an inch more than the agreed length to cut. How dare she ruin the specific, tried-and-tested style that I’d always gone for — bust-length, middle-parted, straight cut? What was I to do now with a missing inch of hair? That wasn’t me anymore, I’d whine. I’d probably heard the age-old adage a million times over; “it’s just hair, it’ll grow”. But hair, as superficial as it seems, is a loyalty concept that I wholeheartedly embrace. This is a sentiment coming from the girl who, in an age when friends were plunging into the deepends of teal-haired Kylie Jenner in 2014, went for the safe (and in my honest opinion, adventurous) look of blonde highlights to beat the #fomo. Vanilla, just the way I like it.
