From heights to creepy-crawlies, most of us have something that terrifies us, but our expert advice will power you up to take it on…
Almost everyone is afraid of something, but you can overcome your debilitating fears. Psychologist Emma Kenny walks us through five of the most common phobias, and what you can do to deal with them.
The fear: heights
WHAT’S BEHIND IT
This is the most common human fear and is, up to a point, natural, says Emma. ‘We’re programmed to fear heights for our own safety, but it can get out of control.’
DEAL WITH IT
‘Track back to where this fear came from – perhaps your parents were overcautious around heights, or maybe you had a fall at some point in childhood,’ says Emma. ‘Understanding where the fear came from can help you challenge it, making you realise you don’t need to be anxious, while taking appropriate steps to keep safe. Also, plan ahead. If you know you’re going to be near a height, make yourself feel secure, by being with people you trust, or not going too close to the edge.’
The fear: public speaking
WHAT’S BEHIND IT
‘This is ultimately a fear that if you say the wrong thing or it doesn’t go well, you’ll be rejected,’ says Emma.
