Entrepreneur Dene Botha – founder of Pride Factor, a life skills academy aimed at the young – counts his own work experience in modeling, acting, TV presenting, surfing, and sports coaching as the formula to his endeavour that tackles youth unemployment
‘You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.’ To Dene Botha, this quote by Steve Jobs best summarises the inspiration behind starting Pride Factor. ‘It’s a total culmination of my life’s work,’ he explained. ‘As I look back, everything I have ever done has entailed following my passion, becoming really good at it and turning it into a fulfilling career and lifestyle. And that’s the message we deliver through Pride Factor.’
According to a report released by Statistics South Africa in May, the youth unemployment rate (that is for those aged 15-34 years old) sits at 38.2%, with approximately 3.3 million youths aged between 15 and 24, ‘Not in Education, Employment, or Training’ – referred to as the NEET rate.
This is where Pride Factor hopes to make a difference – by providing accessible and affordable guidance on how to obtain employment-related skills, plus ensuring youths stay inspired. The ultimate goal, Botha said, is boosting confidence so that the youth can be at the front of the queue in this tough economy.
