Tryout Tips From The Pros

You’ve been dreaming about making the varsity field hockey team since you first picked up a stick. So what’s the only thing standing between you and that plaid skirt? Tryouts!

If just the sight of the word throws your stomach for a loop, you’re not alone: Almost everyone gets nervous in those make-it-orbreak-it moments. These coaches and top athletes share the secrets that’ll have you ready to score...

BREAK IT DOWN

In the weeks leading up to tryouts, keep yourself focused on tinier tasks that are easier to achieve right away.

“Set short-term goals like, ‘I’m going to connect my first passes to teammates,’” suggests longtime soccer coach Daryn “Ozzie” White. “When you do it, that success breeds confidence, and then you can go on to the next goal.” That way, you’ll stay mentally tough—and on task—throughout tryouts.

BUST OUT OF THE BOX

You might be set on being a flyer for the cheer squad, but if the coach is encouraging you to be base, give it a whirl. Why? Because versatility shows you’re a team player—and could lead to even bigger opps.
