As Anita Dongre takes Indian fashion across the Atlantic with her first couture store in NYC, BAZAAR BRIDE captures the designer’s muse, Sonam Kapoor, in a fun-yet-gorgeous avatar.
Sonam Kapoor deboarding a canary yellow taxi on a New York City road, on a breezy summer day, in a powder blue brocade ensemble by Anita Dongre—it is one of the most striking images that has stayed with us from the BAZAAR BRIDE shoot in the Big Apple. When we ask Dongre, she is quick to point out that this look is also one of her favourites. It juxtaposes two different worlds and channels an aesthetic that screams couture-meets-fast-life. Much like Dongre’s upcoming couture store in New York for jet-setting brides, which takes Indian ethnic wear to the American shores. We celebrate this special moment of Indian couture with Dongre and her muse, Sonam Kapoor. Gracing our cover for the fourth time, Kapoor’s impeccable charm is more infectious than ever before. Here, they break down their fashion choices and aesthetic leanings and talk about their upcoming projects.
ANITA SPEAKS
TELL US ABOUT YOUR STORE IN NEW YORK AND WHAT IT ENTAILS.
I have always wanted to open a store here, in the USA, in order to take Indian crafts to an international platform. In July, I launched Grassroot in Soho, and I will be launching our couture store by the end of October. The reason I am opening the bridal store in New York is to make bridal wear accessible to my clientele in the US. Brides today have gotten busier and don’t have the time to make three trips to India for bridal fittings, so we decided to set a base here to make the brand more accessible, and make their life easier.
HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE SHOOTING WITH SONAM KAPOOR?
Oh, Sonam’s amazing. As a designer, you create something beautiful and then someone like Sonam wears it and gives it so much of style and attitude, making it even more appealing. Sonam is gorgeous and the way she carries herself is so rewarding. She looks stunning and can really wear fashion and make it her own.
