Substantial grounds for distraction but I resolutely remain slightly more interested in his mind. Slightly.
I met Singh for the first time in 2013—he was two films old and I was a jaded television host expecting to interview a bratty starlet. He surprised me then as a deeply introspective actor consumed by his craft. Over the years, he combined a hyperbolic goofball public persona with a versatile body of work. You shouldn’t judge him on the former. Or do. But know this—if you really want to get into his mind as an actor, take your cue from the football club he follows in the English Premier League. Arsenal.
It is a truth unofficially acknowledged that an Arsenal fan loves the craft a lot more than the actual result. It is this love for craft that drives Singh not just in football fandom but in his work as well. He whoops as the analogy hits home, “You are not only looking to win when you are an Arsenal fan. I am not result-oriented. I am not about the prize. I am about the process. When Arsenal scores a goal, it is through a series of picture-perfect passes—the process is a lot more enjoyable than the goal. The process then is the prize.”
