Hidden Treasures Of No.1 Barbel River
Angler's Mail|September 03, 2019
BRITAIN’S best big barbel river, the Trent, has shown glipses of its true potential from an area that is a long way upstream from the intensively fished lower hotspots.
Hidden Treasures Of No.1 Barbel River

Three catches reported this week show that the Trent’s less busy middle and upper reaches are well worth fishing.

The biggest ‘whisker’, which was recorded with a super summer weight of 17 lb 6 oz, came from the middle reaches at Long Eaton, near the Attenborough Nature Reserve, Nottinghamshire.

Captor Jodeci McPherson fished a 16 mm Sticky Baits The Krill boilie over a bed of pellets, hemp and Dynamite Red Krill to tempt the monster, at 4am.

The 27-year-old housing modifications manager from Ilkeston, Derbyshire, beat his previous barbel best by over 5 lb, and was delighted to also catch his first-ever river carp, a 15 lb 2 oz mirror.

Meanwhile, this week’s Mail cover star, Carl Salisbury, paid his first ever visit to the Upper Trent, and was rewarded with a giant 16 lb 12 oz barbel, which beat his previous PB of 14 lb 14 oz, a fish from the River Dove.

Making Short Work Of Specimen Chub

It takes angling guide Kenny Parsons a few hours to drive from his home, near Bath, to his favourite Wessex rivers, but it doesn’t seem to bother him, as he just loves to catch big chub on feeder and fl oat tactics, his personal best standing at 7 lb 12 oz. One of his favourite methods for this cunning species is a maggot feeder with a short hook link.
