Braided line has changed the way we fish, providing numerous enhancements over spooling with monofilament or copolymer mainline. While many benefits exist, ultra-thin line can be challenging to work with when attempting to attach fluorocarbon leader of greatly varying diameter.

Attach 50 lb. braid to 80 lb. leader material with a uni-to-uni knot and you’ll have a strong connection, but a bulky knot that will surely catch the guides. A Bimini twist and no name knot certainly results in a more streamlined finish, but now you have two knots to connect mainline to leader. A blood knot is perhaps the cleanest knot in existence, but it’s only useful when attaching lines of similar diameter.

Though all anglers have a handful of knots in their repertoire they routinely turn to, it’s important to keep an open mind to evolving methods. While the angling community has been raving about the FG knot for a few years now, we’ve been content ignoring the masses—until recently.
