The South's Overlooked Late Season Muskies

As November and December approach, many musky anglers will have winterized their boats, stored lures and started reflecting on the season past. However, at this time hot musky action is usually kicking up south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Kentucky offers a long fall season as mild temperatures last well into December. Water temperatures will range from 48 to above 60 degrees during this time. Cold fronts come and go just like anywhere else, but normal conditions generally return in a day or so.

Livebait, casting and trolling are all productive techniques that produce some of the biggest muskies of the year in the South. The current state record musky — over 47 pounds — was caught on a sunny, 70-degree day during the first week of November on a Musky Mayhem Cowgirl at boatside from a shallow flat. Such factors make the choice of going south for the last few muskies of the year exciting.
