Scaled Up

AIthough never out of the news during the late 1960s there was not a lot of information in the usual UK aviation magazines about how the war in South-East Asia (SEA) was actually being conducted until in late 1968 I was 'studying' in the library at High School and came across an article in that September's National Geographic magazine (Volume 134 No.3) by Howard Sochurek titled Air Rescue Behind Enemy Lines. This introduced the world of the United States Air Force PJ (Pararescuemen), Jolly Green Giant (HH-3), and Super Jolly Green Giant (HH-53) - although the nickname then in vogue for the latter, and preferred by the writer was 'BUFF' for 'Big Ugly Fat Fellow' (the last word open to interpretation) as also used to describe the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress. Since then I have continued my interest in what in the wider sense can be described as CSAR (Combat Search and Rescue) and the aircraft involved in it.
