THE next week or two is your last opportunity to plant a hedge this year: leave it any longer, and you’ll have to wait until spring. Right now, the soil is still just about warm enough from summer, so that roots will get nicely established before winter. This means the plants will be in the best state to put on good growth in spring, which in turn means they’ll fill in, bulk out and knit together, to more effectively become the hedge they are supposed to be.
