How lessons we learn in the box help prepare us for life.

The School of Crossfit

CROSSFIT IS AN INTERESTING PHENOMENON. IT HAS SO MANY POSITIVE QUALITIES AND INFLUENCES ON THE PEOPLE WHO DO IT, AS WELL AS THOSE WHO ARE INFLUENCED BY CROSSFITTERS, BE THEY COMPETITIVE OR MERELY RECREATIONAL ATHLETES. CrossFit has really opened my eyes to some interesting aspects of our daily lifestyles. There is so much more to life than just grinding away at work every day, day in and day out. Your family needs you, you need to spend time with your friends, and it is always good to challenge yourself by trying something new. There is also a growing need to put away your smartphone and engage with others in a real-world setting, not via a screen in our increasingly pervasive digital world. And, possibly most importantly, we need to slow down. When you do you’ll be surprised at what you’ve been missing and will continue to miss if you don’t stop and take a second to assess your life.

I’m going to generalise a bit here, but for most of us the same daily scenario plays out: From the time we wake up in the morning until the time we go to bed at night, everything is on the clock and rushed. People generally don’t give themselves enough time in the morning to get ready at a leisurely pace. They set their alarm clocks for as late as possible to get as much sleep as possible, which is understandable given the demands of modern life. But even then, has that sleep been good and restful?

The Florida Effect: The Power Of Priming On Performance

We all like to think that we are in complete control of our actions, our mindsets, and, subsequently, our performance. But what if that weren’t true? Could it be that the words you hear on the radio or read on billboards or the pictures you see on your way to the change room could affect your subsequent performance in the gym, through their impact on your subconscious mind?Well, it just might, at least according to numerous studies into behavioural psychology that have looked at a concept known as the priming effect.
