As human beings, self-improvement is one of our most natural desires. We know there’s a better version of ourselves waiting around the corner… It’s just that so often it seems unattainable, and it only gets harder with each new challenge that life throws at us. Research suggests, however, that we can all harness and cultivate our willpower. Here’s how…
BUILD SIMPLE YET POWERFUL HABITS
High levels of stress and a pressured environment can often cause you to regress and slip into unhealthy and destructive habits. By identifying ‘triggers’ and replacing those old comforts with more productive methods of dealing with stress, you leave less room to slide into old habits.
Planning ahead is important, but there is no harm in starting small. Good habits build self-discipline and help maintain stability. Experiment with different ideas and replacement activities: have a glass of water, do breathing exercises, take a walk or listen to relaxing music. The more often you do it, the more likely these will become your ‘automatic reaction’.
Always remember what your purpose is. Constantly reminding yourself why you are trying to stay focused will boost your willpower and keep you on track and fixed on your goals.
ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY DECISIONS
It’s almost impossible to count the number of decisions we make every day, and sometimes just the sheer volume of them can make you lose your determination. Taking steps to plan ahead and eliminate unnecessary decision-making allows you the space to reserve willpower for more important matters.
