COVID-19 stress on top of everyday stress can cause health problems, financial worries, worsening of mental health, changes in eating and sleeping, and an overall rise in worry. Among the pandemic has been political tensions, racial prejudice, and unemployment spikes. How can we have this year be one of not just trial and tribulation, but one of learning and growth?
Here are five takeaways from the emotional toll of 2020:
CREATE TIME FOR YOUR HEALTH:
Life continues forward at a rapid pace, even during a pandemic: bills, school, work, family, loss. Adding a pandemic and political strife, our bodies are overwhelmed with stress, and the emotional toll is being seen in various ways. Stress is a function of survival, triggering our fight, flight, or freeze responses. These responses cause real changes in our body and too much too often can cause a myriad of health issues. Making time for your health may feel impossible, but if you don’t take the time to take care of your health, your body will make you take the time. Before COVID, my travel schedule kept me on the road with over 35 trips a year. Being home more has allowed me to do the things that create a positive change in my life, like eating healthier and taking the time to exercise, and I’m now down 40 lbs. Many have flipped the script to improve during these difficult times. Create a plan to care for your health by eating well, exercising often, and prioritizing sleep.
