FSSAI To Create Platform To Preserve India's Rich Culinary Heritage

India’s rich food heritage deserves a dedicated platform and with this underlying philosophy, India’s Food Authority has convened various stakeholders including Government bodies, food industry, celebrity chefs, food historians, columnists and bloggers.

FSSAI To Create Platform To Preserve India's Rich Culinary Heritage

By bringing them all together, an effort has been made to create a systematic framework for preservation and promotion of India’s culinary heritage and food culture and rediscover and perhaps revive of some of this rich and diverse heritage in a sustained manner and bring its ‘goodness’ back. More specifically it will focus on food safety, hygiene and wholesome food. As a significant step in this direction, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in collaboration with YES Global Institute has organized a National Conclave on “Indian Food Culture featuring the theme - Let’s bring the goodness back”.

Inaugurated by Sanjeev Kapoor (Padma Shri and Celebrity Chef ), the national conclave has covered thematic discourses, presentations and panel discussions with eminent and thoughtful opinion leaders on sharing international initiatives for promoting our regional cuisines, documenting and archiving of traditional foods and culture, implementing food safety aspects, providing local food guides and authentic culinary experiences and finally the role of food industry towards promotion of traditional foods in our country.

A systematic framework is being co-created in association with a cross section of stakeholders for a robust ecosystem of traditional food culture in India with immediate focus on five important pillars including:

Industry Banks On Technology For Milk Safety

In October 2019, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released a full report after carrying out a survey on safety and quality of liquid milk in the country. Although the survey results hint towards demolishing milk adulteration perception, an in-depth analysis of the report reveals that 1 in 10 packets of milk purchased by consumers could be unsafe. Hence more is required in the dairy sector in order to address the issue of milk adulteration at all levels. On a whole, further steps are required to be taken to achieve transparency and efficiency in the dairy sector of India through public private partnership and best use of technology.

To increase the monitoring on misleading advertisements in the food and beverages sector, the FSSAI signed a MoU with ASCI, the self-regulatory body of advertisement industry in 2016. As per the agreement ASCI comprehensively monitor the advertisements across various media. The move by the two regulators to work together has resulted in reduction in filing of complaints.

The WOF estimates about three out of ten Indians are expected to be obese by 2025.
