It should be noted that ‘destiny’ (Prarabdha) results in the form of favourable and unfavourable circumstances, but it does not force a person to commit a crime. Destiny can bear fruit in the form of favourable and unfavourable circumstances either in the present or in the future. Favourable or unfavourable circumstances, which people face in their lifetime, are a result of either Prarabdha (destiny) or of Purushartha (present efforts). To clear this, first we have to understand what is the meaning of Purushartha (effort). A human being has desires of four kinds Artha, (wealth) Dharma, (righteousness) Kama, (passion) and Moksha (liberation). Artha (wealth is of two kinds, movable and immovable property) , Kama (passion) mundane pleasures are known as 'Kama'. They are of eight kinds: sound, touch, form, taste, smell, honour, praise and comfort. Moksha is self-realization. Out of these four, in 'Artha' (wealth) and 'Kama' (desire or passion), there is predomination of destiny, 'Purushartha' is secondary while in 'Dharma' (righteousness) and salvation ‘Moksha’, there is predominance of 'Purushartha' (effort) and 'Prarabdha' is secondary.
