The word Chitta encompasses all our sensory organs i.e. eyes, ears, nose, etc., i.e. Gnyanendriya and Karmendriya (organs of action), energy, and our mind.
Our mind is never stable, it keeps jumping around all the time. When the mind is directed towards the eyes, they function better. When it is directed towards the ears, they function better. The mind keeps shifting from one object to the other, through the senses. It is our job to control it and focus it at one point so that work can be done effectively. The mind acts like a middle-man or a co-ordinator. For example, breathing is a natural process but when the co-ordinator comes into the picture, our breathing becomes more effective.
