THE MILKFISH (Chanos chanos), locally known as “bangus,” is our country’s most important cultured fish. It is grown in about 200,000 hectares of brackish water ponds (Editor’s note: also spelled “brackishwater”), 10,000 hectares of freshwater and brackish water fishpens, and over 5,000 floating cages throughout the country. In 2016, we produced more than 400,000 metric tons of farmed milkfish.

Producing Milkfish Fingerlings In Brackish Water Ponds Is Profitable

While we were once dependent on the gathering of milkfish fry from the wild in our coastal waters, most of the fry are now produced in hatcheries with the advent of the artificial breeding of the species. Of the 2.8 billion fry required annually by our milkfish industry, only about 60%, however, is produced by local hatcheries. With the dwindling supply from the wild, the fry is imported from Taiwan and Indonesia to fill the demand.

Her free time during the quarantine allowed her not only to focus on cultivating her existing plants, but also to produce vegetables at home using plastic drums. Cu's goal to provide food for their family is what urged her to establish a decorative, yet an edible garden incorporating ornamental and food crops. "With the use of the blue drums, I was able to achieve my intention of creating an edible but decorative garden plus I was able to repurpose the drums as well,” Cu explained.
