Stitch by stitch, this lifelong knitter sends gifts of love and support to far-flung soldiers.
No matter the season, at Kim Opperman’s Shelby, Ohio, home you’ll find stockings hung by the chimney with care. You’ll also find them hung from the baker’s rack, the balcony and, at this time of year, the Christmas tree. These socks join knit washcloths and caps, gourmet soaps, snacks and coffee in huge care packages Kim sends to military units— some with more than 800 service members—stationed in the Middle East. Each box of goodies comes courtesy of Socks for Soldiers, an organization Kim founded in 2006 after seeing a World War II-era Life magazine cover showing a woman knitting socks for service members.
