Gardeners and businesses urged tosource only UK-growntrees
Conservation charity the Woodland Trust (WT) is asking everyone to ensure trees being planted this autumn and in the future have been UK grown. The plea is a further move to help prevent the accidental import of pests and diseases from other countries.
WT states that between 1970 and 2013, 267 plant pathogens were inadvertently introduced into the UK, with two thirds native to mainland Europe, including chalara or dieback disease of ash, first confirmed in the UK in 2012.
