It can be edgy, and just as easily, lend warmth. In its natural form, a log of wood is as beautiful as a wonderfully-sculpted piece of art. In the right hands, wood transforms. This artisanal pairing of wood and dextirity is an eternal one. We salute the revivalists who make it a point to understand the innate nature of the material and keep the amazing block of wood at the forefront of what they do. Here’s introducing to you the young woodmakers of India.
NISHITA KAMDAR
Designer & Co-founder, POD
Founded by architects Nishita Kamdar of the namesake design studio and Veeram Shah, POD (Pieces of Desire) is an avant-garde collaboration that focuses on artisanal, bespoke and handcrafted pieces of furniture. POD stands out for its exceptional wooden designs, as Nishita says, “Wood is so versatile...it’s moldable, bendable and easy to craft. We use only reclaimed Valsadi Teak Wood, to ensure there is no harm to the environment from our end. Black, contrasted by the starkness of brass and the earthiness of rattan, juxtaposes materials for us.”
WHAT WE DESIGN IS NOT MERELY TO PLEASE THE EYE BUT TO EVOKE AN EMOTION, A RESPONSE TO THE SHAPES, MATERIALS, TEXTURES AND COLOURS.
