A Placid Play of Colours

Interior designers Archana and Vikram Jain design an apartment for a family of nine members across three generations, keeping their requirements and aesthetics in mind.

Our aim is to design for the satisfaction of the client’, says Pune-basedi nterior designer Vikram Jain of the approach he and his interior designer wife Archana Jain adopt while approaching a project. Shown a 3000 sq ft terrace apartment, on the ninth floor of a building on the PuneSatara Road, the couple interacted with the clients to understand their requirements.

Having been involved in the textile business for years, the client was very keen on a home with colour like the fabrics that surround him at work. And as he lives in a joint family with his parents, his own family as well as his younger brother and his family, he wanted the apartment designed to offer spacious common and private spaces for all his family members.

An Organized Layout

With these two requirements spanning aesthetics and function, the designers surveyed the apartment and decided to rework some of the spaces before designing them. The master bedroom (for the grandparents) which initially bordered the 700 sq ft terrace was interchanged with the living area to make for a large common area. Secondly, given the family’s love for music, a cosy 140 sq ft home theatre space was designed above the double-height central informal family area.

In this way the layout was finalized with a passage running through the home from the entrance and a central family area, with both informally demarcating the different spaces. Set in the heart of the home, the family area with contiguous dining area nicely divides spaces with the formal living room, master bedroom and the children’s room to one side and the kitchen and the two bedrooms for the two brothers (the client and his younger brother) on the other side.
