Nestling amonst a small area of greenery, almost the only one left in the area, Joy Roy has refashioned and refurbished a small outhouse of a larger bungalow with the memorabilia of his family’s life.
When Hadrian, the second century Roman emperor, returned to Rome after more than a decade of ceaseless travel, putting down rebellions, reestablishing the might of the Roman empire over territories which had sought independence during the unchecked political chaos during the reign of his inept predecessors, he built himself a private palace outside Rome at Tivoli. Spread over hundreds of acres and embellished with the artefacts he had collected on his travels, he built one unique room in his mammoth palace – a room completely closed to the outside world, with no windows, surrounded by a moat, and further enclosed within by an arched colonnade. When he wished to be completely alone, he sequestered himself in this room and not even the highest authority in the land had the authority to enter, except at his wish. When he wanted to re-enter the world, the high walls slid aside to allow access to the outside world.
