Glamour & Glitz

An apartment in Mumbai designed by Spatium Interiors employs a contemporary aesthetic while delivering a fully functional space. Devyani Jayakar takes the tour.

When Anil Panchal, Sagar Deshmukh and Vandana Deshmukh of Spatium Interiors met the clients, the brief they received was very clear. Space had to be contemporary and elegant, even as it felt like home for a family of four – a couple, their son and daughter. So, the trio set to work, but within a very tight time frame of just four months. They were further handicapped by restrictions on working hours. ‘All work would come to a total halt during public and bank holidays,’ recalls Anil.

‘The layout of the three-bedroom apartment was such that the entrance to the son’s room was through the dining area,’ says Vandana. ‘Since we were not very happy with this situation, we worked hard to camouflage the door and make it a design element.’

‘At the entrance, we retained an antique wooden frame,’ says Sagar. The door is finished in veneer with grooves and 6mm-thick brass inlay work. A long brass handle adds to the beauty of this elegant door design, even as it gives an indication of what lies within. Inside, the lobby has a shoe rack and a ledge to sit on while wearing one’s footwear. A large Venetian mirror serves as the backdrop to this ledge with grey, raw silk wallpaper upping the glamour quotient.

The living and dining rooms occupy an arm each of an L-shaped area, with most of the walls covered in textured wallpaper. Beige back painted glass and rose gold mirror strips are used to create a wall pattern which also camouflages the door of the son’s bedroom which is accessed from the dining area. A loose bar unit stands tall with a Buddha sculpture embellished with mother of pearl inlay..
