DINING AREA
A dramatic curved glazed wall affords views of the property’s original rear bay window as well as creating a courtyard between old and new. This extension has added a dining space to the kitchen and it’s now a favourite hangout place for the family.

DEN
The door in the bay leads directly to the newly created internal courtyard (see left). Even in the old part of the house owner Jessica likes to incorporate statement touches like this bold yellow sofa and lamp. ‘It’s joyous,’ she says.

THE OWNERS
Simon and Jessica and their three children, aged 15, 13 and nine. Simon works in commercial property and Jessica in marketing.
THE PROPERTY
Edwardian semi in north London. On the ground floor there is a living room, den, kitchen-diner, utility room and cloakroom. On the first floor there are three bedrooms, a bedroom-study, a bathroom and a shower room. The loft accommodates the main bedroom and en suite.
When Jessica and Simon decided to extend their home to accommodate the needs of their growing family, they didn’t choose an obvious route. ‘Outside the box’ sums up their left-field approach, both figuratively and literally. While rear additions tend to be a classic square shape, this couple opted to complement the graceful outline of their Edwardian property with a strikingly modern curved glass wall leading to a spacious dining extension.
