Summer is here and the heat is increasing everyday in parts of India! So we at Asian Photography magazine thought some of you might want to stay indoors in the summers and need some tips to keep taking pictures indoors! We hope this article on shooting indoor portraits helps you get through the unbearable heat!
Why Shoot Indoor?
There are a lot of reasons to shoot portraits indoors. Even though one might argue that outdoor portraits produce amazing bokeh backgrounds and can bring a very natural feel to portraits but shooting indoors is sometimes much more preferable. The primary reason is that the light outdoors is quite unpredictable and might not be what the photographer wants at the time of shooting. If you shoot indoors then you can use external studio lights and reflectors to your advantage. Several other factors like extreme heat etc can make your shoot miserable if you do not have an air-conditioned setup for your model.
How to Shoot Indoors?
Now that we have a basic idea as to why we shoot indoors let’s get on to how to shoot indoors. To shoot portraits you will naturally need a few things that we will list down one by one.
Background
Background is ever important in a portrait, as apart from the face it is the only thing that the eye can wander off to. One needs to be extremely cautious of the background. If you want the portrait to feel more natural you can use the natural room background and use a shallow depth of field to blur the background a little. Select your background on the basis of your subject and what you wish to portray. Visualise how you want your final image to look and choose your backgrounds accordingly. Look around the house and see which objects or which furniture or which wall will look good in the background. Use reflectors or artificial lights on the background so that there isn’t a huge difference in exposure. You can also buy studio backgrounds or you can use a single colour bedsheet if you do not want to invest in one!
