Celtic celebrating 130 years, and counting…
THIS year, Celtic will celebrate its 130th birthday, the anniversary of the club’s foundation coming on November 6, 2017. Throughout this season, the View will be celebrating our long and illustrious history by looking at some of the quirky or lesser known moments from 1887 until the present day. This week we highlight some of Celtic’s own-goal stories...
DOUBLE TROUBLE
On April 13, 1977 a remarkable two-minute burst of generosity from Andy Lynch helped make quite a few bob for Hibernian. The occasion was a midweek trip to Motherwell where a win for the Hoops would tie up the title and although the home side took the lead in the first half, hopes were still high as even a draw would make Celtic virtually uncatchable such was their superior goal difference over Rangers. However, that looked unlikely when Lynch put through his own net in the 85th minute – and all-but impossible when he did the exact same thing just two minutes later. The 3-0 defeat ensured a bumper crowd at Easter Road on the Saturday where Celtic did clinch the title.
