No matter how vast and sophisticated Mercedes-Benz’s roster becomes, the E-Class remains the linchpin for the brand’s Indian subsidiary. Not only was the E-Class the car that introduced India to the three-pointed star, but also the car that opened the portals of true automotive luxury becoming emblematic of the change that was ushered in post-liberalisation. Over 25 years later, the E-Class is still the preferred mode of transport for the well-heeled Indian customer, with Merc having sold 45,000 units of it thus far. The long-wheelbase treatment has proven particularly effective in surreptitiously blurring the lines between itself and the formidable S-Class, and so Merc has decided to stick with it for the facelifted model.
